Future Plan

The Foundation has been tasked by the BoG to coordinate and drive future funding needs for MCKK via its endowment fund. It is planned that the Foundation will be establishing a Waqf fund to house the existing endowment, and more importantly to solicit new contributions to grow the endowment for MCKK.

A key role of the Foundation is to implement the recommendations of Project Sayong, a masterplan by the BoG to re-establish MCKK as a premier school producing future leaders of the country. An excerpt of the recommendations of Project Sayong is in the appendix of this report.

Some of the Foundation’s early initiatives were on infrastructure projects to provide a better physical environment for MCKK. To date, the purpose-built International Baccalaureate complex (Kompleks Sultan Azlan Shah) and a new performance hall (Auditorium Tun Abdul Razak) to replace the old Tun Abdul Razak Hall have been constructed and are in use; a basketball court near New Hostel, and two futsal grass courts next to the main water tank were also constructed. The Foundation also contributed a 30-seater bus for the IB Program and school use.

The Foundation has also been regularly funding ongoing repairs and maintenance of MCKK’s ageing physical infrastructure. In addition to funding repairs and maintenance of dormitories, classrooms and other facilities, the Foundation is also paying for ongoing pest control treatment for termites at the Big School.

The latest infrastructure initiative undertaken by the Foundation is the upgrading and refurbishment of the Pavilion.

This initiative is the first major project undertaken together with the Malay College Old Boys Association (MCOBA), and saw the first full refurbishment and restoration of an existing building at MCKK, as part of a longer-term program.

Beyond infrastructure related projects, the Foundation has been supporting a broad range of co-curricular programs at MCKK. A key area has been the development of the MCKK Wind Orchestra (MCWO) ensemble. A highlight of the MCWO calendar is the Royal Command Performance, in the presence of DYMM Sultan Perak and DYMM Raja Perempuan Perak. This annual showcase event has been held since 2015, with the Foundation as its main organizer. The Foundation, as the organizer of the Royal Command Performances, underwrites and fund the performance and any surplus from the sale of tickets are distributed to the participating schools for their respective orchestra development.

The Foundation has also supported student participation in international competitions for robotics, world scholars’ competition and art festivals.

The Foundation was the primary driver for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) which saw its first cohort of students in 2011. The IBDP, a pre-university course, was introduced as a sixth form alternative, to provide mature students as role models for the lower forms, as recommended by the Project Sayong report. To date eight cohorts have completed the IBDP at MCKK, with most of the students pursuing their tertiary studies in UK and Australia, mostly on full scholarships.

In support of the IBDP at MCKK, the Foundation has to date sponsored over 20 deserving students for the IB diploma program. The sponsorship covers the fees for the full two years of the program. In 2016, the Foundation also stepped in to help sponsor four MCKK IBDP students who secured offers at top universities in the UK and Canada. These students, despite having unconditional offers, were unable to get scholarships to continue with their undergraduate programs due to fewer scholarships available.

The Foundation also supports human resource development at MCKK for teachers and students. For co-curricular activities, the Foundation has provided funding for student activities, such as student summits and conferences, as well as participation in international conferences/workshops and competitions; dramas, music, and arts & literature. The Foundation have also supported MCKK academic staff, and has funded MCKK teachers’ participation at courses, workshops and seminars, both locally and abroad.

Sports has been a hallmark of the boarding school experience at MCKK since its founding in 1905. To this end the Foundation has worked with other stakeholders (in particular the Parents Teachers Association and MCOBA), by contributing monies and supporting projects to improve or upgrade sports facilities in MCKK. This includes purchasing gym equipment, rejuvenating the football pitch and rugby field and constructing two new futsal courts.
